[Sense] What is Euthanasia?

Euthanasia is the termination of a very sick person’s life in order to relieve them of their suffering.

A person who undergoes euthanasia usually has an incurable condition. But there are other instances where some people want their life to be ended. In many cases, it is carried out at the person’s request but there are times when they may be too ill and the decision is made by relatives, medics or, in some instances, the courts.

The issue has been at the centre of very heated debates for many years and is surrounded by religious, ethical and practical considerations.

Personally, I think life is precious, and we all should appreciate it. I do agree that we shouldn’t give up our life so easily.

In other hand, life is supposed to be enjoyable. If it seems not to be worth to live anymore for someone, just let him go as he wish. But please make sure they have the clearest vision about what he is doing. Because the borderline between suicide and euthanasia is blur.Hence, I am with legalization voluntary euthanasia (with some additional conditions *) for who still be able to give a decision himself. A human being should have the right to decide on their own issues of life and death. We all stand beside the case and therefore hardly understand what the patient have to suffer.

Talk about ethics? The most ethical way we can do for the ones who don’t have any choice but suffer (both physically and mentally) unbearable pain in every single minute are to make up their mind, to convince them life is still valuable, to cheer them up, to take care of them… But not take a way the right choosing which ways to face the problem themselves.

*Additional conditions:
  • challenging time: psychological help, offer palliative care (for both patient and their family’s members/friends) , reduce the pressure patient have to suffer, …
  • never give the power to end people’s life to a doctor. It means the decision of euthanasia must come from the patients themselves or a court (if their family ask to).
However, for those who can’t, there should be a court to examine practical situations. And the decisions maybe base on the state of sickness, families’ desires, or cost of medical care… Some relatives are willing to carry on the treatment and believe in magical.
In a nutshell, euthanasia can just apply for a limited patients (whose cases can’t be worst like terminally ill, vegetative life… ) . Plus, there’s must be strictly regulations and laws to guarantee euthanasia will be carried out in the most humanistic way.

Otherwise, it will bring some unwanted effects. One of them is disabled people will feel their life are devalued, less worth than able-bodied people. They will see euthanasia as a totally different meaning message: “It’s better to be dead than disabled.” And their view of life becomes more pessimistic, feel that their disabilities are such disasters, that they should end their life peacefully by voluntarily euthanasia instead of fighting.
