[Trekking] Nanhu Mt. - King's Mountain(南湖大山)

Team: YZMC
Time: June 22-26, 2014
Place: Yilan-Hualien-Taichung crossover
Difficulties: *** (3/5), since it's summer hike.

Intro:

Nanhu Mountain, known to the Atayal tribe in Beiyanan Aboriginal Village (Nanshan village) as Babo Bajiyu, is the north peak of the Five Mountains with a magnificent landscape. Nanhu Peak is the highest peak in Taroko National Park sits at the north tip of the Central Mountain Range. Surrounded by mountains on the Nanhu block, it is named the King’s Seat. The most characteristic features are two U-shaped valleys (Nanhu Cirques), which set up a natural wonder.

As Barking Deer News described, the view expected: The first day’s trail passes through lush mixed temperate and pine forest. On later days there are expansive views from alpine meadows of dwarf bamboo, juniper and rhododendron. At the higher sections the paths traverse craggy cliffs next to enormous landslides, ending in the glacial cirques these mountains are famous for.

Notes
Siyuan Col (思源啞口)
The trail head Siyuan Col is 3 hours from Taipei City in southern Yilan County, quite close to Wuling Farm - the trail head of  Snow Mountain.

New Yunleng Cabin (新雲稜山莊)
One of the important thing of the hike is comfortable rate of toilets. Yunleng has 2 choices: indoor and outdoor. The outdoor one with very good view of faraway mountains range. But it upset whenever I'm thinking of where will those gold go to. Because it seems going directly to the wood. In the back, there's the view of Nanhu mountain. And the water source, very precious one. Therefore please don't use water for non-sense reason like washing bowls.

Shenmazhen Mountain (審馬陣山)
No view at all, surrounded by very tall trees. However, it's in Taiwan's 100 highest mt. list, and just 5 mins away from the main trail leads to Nanhu. So, why not visit? And here also got the enormous green meadows. Up to Taiwan country's size, to find a big meadow is not easy.

Nanhu Mountain North Mountain (南湖北山)
10 mins aways from the main trail. On the top placed a heavy stone written "start of Lang Yang river". You can have a wonderful view of opposite mountain range, and it's special geology.

Wuyanfeng (五岩峰)
Probably one of the most excited challenges of the hike. It's said better feeling if it's cloudy with little rainny, since height of the cliffs was covered with milky fog. The dangerous view can defeat any faint- heartie (like me).  Before departing, this obstacles made me nervous like hell. Although, it turns out not to be that scary, however definitely you must watch out every step you make.

Nanhu East Peak,

Nanhu Shelter (南湖山屋)
It's quite a beautiful mountain cabin, pure water resource. Once of nicest looking mt. cabin now in my list, due to surround floral and high mountain environment.

Taosaifeng (陶賽峰)
A cool rock range on the trail leads to Mabishan Mt. Layers of rock ard >45 degree. Challenge for climbing up but worth for its stunning mt. ranges view.

Nanhu Main Peak (南湖大山)
3547m, as highest peak of the whole block, not an easy way to come to the top. From Nanhu Cabin you have to beat the big bush in stead of climb straight ahead. Through the big stones gap, view of Central Peak. Experienced hikers make long trek of Nanhu Central Peak in ard. 6 days.

Nanhu Cirques (南湖圈谷)
In general, cirques on steeper slopes appear in half circles or are horseshoe-shaped with deep indentations whereas those on more gentle slopes mostly are shallow oval bottom lands with rocks. Nanhu Mountain’s cirques are the most apparent glacier remains in Taiwan. Although there is some disagreement among scholars, most agree that cirques are formed by the accumulation, movement, and erosion of glaciers. In winter, those cirques must be a great skiing place, I guess.
